Learning to pray doesn’t have to be difficult.

The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus didn’t give them an essay or a thesis on prayer. There wasn’t a string of expectations or traditions for prayer. He simply gave them an example of prayer with six steps.

Therefore, following these 6 easy steps will help you pray the Lord's Way.

1. Pray in Secret

There is a time to pray with others, but there is a time to be alone with God. Try to get away with God each day to pray in secret.

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6.6).

2. Recognize God’s Authority and His Holiness

Come to God with an attitude of awe and reverence but also with the deep awareness that you are loved by Him. Prayer is talking with a Perfect Father. *To make God real, read Making God Real in the Home.

“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6.9).

3. Agree with His Kingdom Plan

You don’t have to stress, feeling like you have to hold the entire world on your shoulders. God has big plans for you. Rest in His mighty hands. *Find purpose, read Believe

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6.10).

4. Know that God will Provide for your Needs

God will take care of your physical, emotional and spiritual needs as you learn to trust in Him. Fear is the opposite of faith. Pray for your needs and the needs of others and believe that God cares about the details of your life. *Forget faith, read One Life without Fear.

“Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6.11).

5. Forgive Others and Receive Forgiveness

Offering forgiveness is a huge part of the Christian lifestyle. People will never be perfect, but God can turn your hurts into His good. Forgive others and yourself quickly, so bitterness doesn’t get a foothold. *Forgive yourself, read The Self-harm of Words.

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6.12).

6. Aggressively Avoid Evil

There is evil all around you — movies, books, music, relationships and the Internet can be filled with beauty or ugliness. Pray and ask God if you should veer away from something that is allowing Satan to have territory in your life. *Avoid Satan, read New Phone Line.

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6.13)

Adding a devotional to your quiet time will help you meditate on God’s Word. I have written Slay the Day with short, daily devotionals that will give your life victory.
